Geneva, July 3 /Xinhua/ — The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday officially declared the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship officially over following the end of quarantine for the last person who had contact with the infected individuals and no new cases for over five weeks.
“Today, the last person who had contact with someone exposed to the hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius has completed quarantine, received a negative test result, and returned home. Since May 25, no new cases have been registered. Therefore, we are very pleased to announce that WHO considers the hantavirus outbreak to be over,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during his opening remarks at the media briefing on Thursday.
The WHO was notified of the outbreak on May 2 by the United Kingdom’s National Focal Point for International Health Regulations. It concerned a cluster of severe acute respiratory illness cases on board a cruise ship flying the Dutch flag.
A total of 13 cases of illness were recorded, including three fatal outcomes. More than 650 contacts were identified and are under surveillance by health authorities. –0–
