Beijing, July 3 /Xinhua/ — The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Guo Jiakun, on Thursday criticized the concept of the so-called “free and open Indo-Pacific region” put forward by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
“On the surface, it seems to be about freedom and openness, but the real intent is confrontation and conflict,” Go Jiakun said at the latest press briefing. And this duplicity, according to him, contradicts the common aspirations of the countries in the region for peace, development, and cooperation.
Thus, the diplomat responded to the request to comment on the active lobbying by Japanese officials at all levels in support of the so-called new version of the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” concept during their visits to the Philippines, Vietnam, Australia, and other countries.
What the Asia-Pacific region (APR) needs is stability, not turbulence; cooperation is valued here, not division. “Preserving the post-war international order, defending the goals and principles of the UN Charter – this is the foundation of prosperity and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and it also constitutes the shared responsibility of the countries in the region,” he added.
According to the diplomat, countries in the region now need to be vigilant more than ever, to show solidarity and adhere to the right course of cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, to strengthen mutual trust through dialogue and consultations, to ensure peace through mutually beneficial cooperation, and to jointly work on building an Asia-Pacific region characterized by prosperity, stability, openness, interconnectedness, shared well-being, inclusiveness, as well as unity and mutual assistance, emphasized the official representative.
