The team from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University took third place in the 6th Atomic Brain Ring named after E. I. Ignatenko, organized by the Rosenergoatom concern. The intellectual competition took place in Obninsk during the 4th International Youth Nuclear Forum OBNINSK NEW-2026 at the Rosatom Technical Academy.
This year, the tournament became part of the OBNINSK NEW-2026 forum program for the first time, dedicated to the anniversary of the launch of the world’s first nuclear power plant in Obninsk. In the final, six teams from partner universities in the nuclear industry from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Tomsk, Kazan, Sevastopol, and Vladivostok, who passed the preliminary selection, competed.
The E. I. Ignatenko Atomic Brain Ring is held annually by the Rosenergoatom concern. Its distinctive feature is a unique question bank, which is specially developed each year for the tournament. The tasks are dedicated to the history of nuclear energy, outstanding nuclear scientists, scientific discoveries, and modern technologies. This year, participants noted that there were significantly more questions on atomic topics than before, making the competition even more specialized.
The intellectual game was conducted by Andrey Kozlov, a master of the game “What? Where? When?”, president of the International Association of “What? Where? When?” clubs.
I was fortunate to participate in the Brain-Ring for the second time. I can note that the game is just as engaging and dynamic. Moreover, this is one of those cases when even watching from the sidelines and making your own guesses is very entertaining. While you are at the game tables, you are opponents, but in the spectator stands, absolutely everyone becomes a comrade with whom you can exchange opinions and have interesting conversations. I especially want to highlight the organizers’ efforts: every year the format gets better and more interesting. And the combination of logical questions and questions on atomic topics allows, on the one hand, all spectators to get involved, and on the other hand—fully justifies the name Brain-Ring — atomic,” said SPbPU student Sergey Andreiko.
The trip to Obninsk will be remembered for a long time!— shared team member Maria Potapenkova.“We attended many interesting lectures, met with HR specialists from various divisions of Rosatom, and even had the chance to participate in a debate masterclass — it was an invaluable experience. There was also an opportunity to connect with like-minded people from different parts of the country. And participating in the Atomic Brain Ring was not only a test of knowledge in the atomic industry but also a real logical battle, where every question made us think hard. It is doubly pleasing that our team managed to take third place.”
