Beirut/Jerusalem, June 29 /Xinhua/ — Israeli military forces on Sunday blew up a tunnel in the village of Majdal-Zoun in southern Lebanon, with the sounds of the explosion heard over a wide area. This was reported by the Lebanese National Information Agency /NIA/.
According to the joint statement of the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Defense of Israel Katz, an underground facility over 200 meters long, located at a depth of more than 25 meters, was destroyed. Inside were hundreds of units of weapons and several launchers, presumably intended for carrying out strikes on Israeli territory.
Politicians noted that Israel notified the USA in advance about the upcoming destruction of the tunnel.
“Israeli military personnel will remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon and continue to destroy terrorist infrastructure, eliminate threats to population centers in northern Israel, and ensure the safety of Israeli citizens,” the statement says.
Before the tunnel was destroyed, Israeli military warned local authorities in northern Israel that a powerful explosion was expected, which could activate earthquake warning systems.
Israel is stopping military activity in southern Lebanon, despite the framework agreement reached on Friday between the USA, Israel, and Lebanon. It provides for a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from two areas in southern Lebanon and is intended to pave the way for the establishment of lasting peace between the two countries.
According to the Ministry of Health of Lebanon, as a result of Israeli strikes from March 2 to June 28, 4,247 people died, and another 12,195 were injured.
