Within the framework of the first International Transport and Logistics Forum in Saint Petersburg, a round table was held dedicated to the development of a high-speed railway network in Russia. The discussion was attended by Vice Premier Vitaly Savelyev and Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin.
Last year, construction began on Russia’s first high-speed railway line Moscow – Saint Petersburg. According to the plan approved by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, five HSR lines will be built: from Moscow to Saint Petersburg, Minsk, Yekaterinburg via Kazan, as well as lines to Adler and Ryazan.
“The scale of the project is unique. The project is being implemented in unique natural and climatic conditions of the northern latitudes. Many technological solutions laid down in it during the construction of transport infrastructure have not been used before. The VSM Moscow – Saint Petersburg will become the world’s first highway designed for speeds up to 400 km/h on a 1520 mm gauge,” emphasized Vitaly Savelyev.
The project has become a powerful driver for the domestic economy. More than 150 enterprises from 36 regions of the country are involved in the production of the first fully Russian high-speed train. For the production of beams for spans of structures and bridges along the VSM route, 10 factories will be built.
To ensure the operation of the first line between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, about 8 thousand people are needed, and the development of the entire high-speed railway network requires attracting more than 100 thousand specialists. Based on the Russian University of Transport, the “Academy VSM” is already operating, where engineers of the new generation are trained.
“VSM is one of the largest scientific and technological projects of modern Russia. It can be compared to a huge iceberg: behind its visible part – for example, a modern domestic train – there is colossal work of science and the education system, close cooperation of more than 150 enterprises. A new specialty has been approved – a high-speed transport engineer. All this work brings the Russian economy to a completely different level of technological maturity. We are gaining full sovereignty in VSM technology and are ready to share these competencies with our international partners,
Discussion participants concluded that the development of high-speed rail transport is a foundation for the long-term economic growth and technological leadership of Russia for decades ahead.
