New material for skin defects caused by pathogenic microbes or fungi has been developed by scientists at the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University as part of a research team. The researchers conducted successful experiments on laboratory animals. The results of the work were published in the scientific journal Applied Surface Science. Journalists from RIA Novosti reported on the development.
The material was developed by scientific staff of the laboratory of nano- and microencapsulation of biologically active substances of the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Biotechnology. The development showed high antibacterial and antifungal activity.
The new biosafe polymer material will allow control of the healing process of each epithelium. In the future, the development will be able to replace household plasters consisting of adhesive bases and fabric pads. The antimicrobial activity of the material is ensured by the inclusion of metal-organic frameworks based on copper in the film composition.
