How not to fall prey to scammers, protect your savings, and not become an accomplice, was explained by a professor from GUU to participants of the special military operation and people with limited capabilities undergoing rehabilitation at the A.I. Meshcheryakov Family Center (Center).
On June 17, a lecture on “Behavioral Economics and Financial Security” was delivered by Galina Sorokina, Director of the Institute of Economics and Finance at GUE, Professor of the Department of World Economy and International Economic Relations.
Listeners learned about the main types of manipulations used by scammers and ways to avoid them. It was noted during the lecture that knowledge of the basic schemes of scammers’ actions (methods of stealing personal data – phishing, vishing, smishing) reduces the likelihood of falling into a trap by 80%, since when encountering them in reality, a person does not panic but analyzes the situation.
The expert emphasized that there is no place for trust in financial security, so it is especially important to verify incoming calls, call back official numbers, and not follow links from suspicious messages. Every day, media report stories about people losing their savings in 5 minutes of conversation with a “bank employee.” Social engineering works better than any virus – scammers manipulate emotions (fear, joy, greed).
Separately, in the lecture series, tools used by scammers were considered, for example, neural networks for forging voices and appearances of people, phishing sites that are difficult to distinguish from genuine ones, etc.
GUU has been preparing personnel in the field of finance since its inception, but today all strategies for financial management lose their meaning without financial security skills. That is why for almost 10 years GUU has been paying attention to financial security issues, being part of the International Network Institute in the field of combating money laundering and financing of terrorism. University lecturers deliver lectures on financial security not only to students as part of their education but also conduct open lectures for various categories of the population.
Recall that in April 2026, the State University of Management and the A.I. Meshcheryakov Family Center signed a cooperation agreement that includes training of the Center’s wards in various directions. Thus, in April, SUM scientists conducted a master class on prompt engineering, and in May, a full-fledged educational program in this field began.
