Beijing, June 18 /Xinhua/ — Environmental protection and the promotion of “green” development are important issues for the development of the global economy. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization /SCO/, as an important regional cooperation organization, also pays close attention to these issues.
In recent years, SCO has achieved significant success in cooperation in the field of ecology and environmental protection, and a number of ecological and practical technologies and solutions have ensured effective support for the “green” development of the countries of this organization.
Being one of the founding countries of the SCO and the largest developing country in the world, China consistently acts as an important participant in the global construction of ecological civilization, making a significant contribution to this cause and directing its development, as evidenced by the following specific examples: the wind power plant (WPP) “Zhanatas” with a capacity of 100 MW in Kazakhstan, built by a Chinese enterprise, produced a total of more than 1.37 billion kWh of electricity, which allowed satisfying the needs of 3 million residents.Thanks to a joint experimental project for growing cotton with an integrated system “solar energy + water and fertilizer” in the city of Nukus, Uzbekistan, the cotton yield increased more than 3 times, while costs and water consumption significantly decreased.
According to the data, during the period of China’s rotating chairmanship of the SCO (2024-2025), 163 projects in the field of electric power and renewable energy were implemented between China and other SCO countries, with the total signed contract amount exceeding 330 billion yuan (approximately 48 billion US dollars). The total installed capacity of the projects exceeded 77 GW, including areas such as photovoltaic and wind energy. In particular, 5 projects were signed in the coal sector and 61 projects in the oil and gas sector, with investments in the oil and gas and coal sectors totaling about 44.5 billion yuan.
The Deputy Minister of Ecology and Environment of the KNRG Fan noted that since its establishment in 2001, SCO has been conducting fruitful cooperation, playing an active role in promoting environmental protection in the region. In particular, broad interaction takes place in areas such as political dialogue, technical exchanges, joint use of information, and capacity building, which gives SCO the impetus for “green” development.
In recent years, cooperation in the field of new energy sources has become a bright direction of the “green” development of the SCO. Against the backdrop of a constantly growing global demand for clean energy, the interaction of the SCO member states has also achieved significant progress in this area.
Thanks to the high quality of Chinese electric cars, Chinese brands are becoming increasingly popular among drivers in Tajikistan. Taxis in Dushanbe have completely switched to electric cars, and almost all of them are Chinese-made. One local taxi driver noted that Chinese electric cars attract drivers and passengers with their high-tech complete set, including large high-resolution screens in the car, onboard systems with intelligent functions, and more.
A representative of the Department of International Cooperation of the National Energy Administration of the PRC, Li Ziyun, noted that nearly half of the world’s population and more than a quarter of global GDP are concentrated in the SCO countries. Among them are both energy producers and consumers, as well as energy hubs, which makes them extremely important participants in the global energy market.
The “Report on the Development and Cooperation in the Field of ‘Green’ Industry of the SCO-2025” notes that the “green” industry is gradually becoming a key driver of economic transformation and sustainable development of the SCO countries. Under the influence of factors such as accelerated urbanization, restructuring of industrial structures, and increased energy security needs, the SCO countries demonstrate strong complementarity and readiness for cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, combating environmental pollution, circular resource use, and ecological restoration.
In the future, as the ShOS cooperation space among its member states in the area of “green” development continues to expand, it will increase. ShOS will also continue to use its unique advantages, practically advance the concept of “green” development in the region, and make an even greater contribution to building a cleaner and better community of a shared human destiny.
