Islamabad, June 12 /Xinhua/ — A total of 22 military personnel died as a result of a military helicopter crash in the Kashmir region controlled by Pakistan, Xinhua and sources in the security service reported on Thursday.
A colonel and two majors, as well as 19 other servicemen, died on Wednesday as a result of the crash of a Mi-17 helicopter of the army aviation near the Muzaffarabad area, sources said.
According to an early statement published by the Interdepartmental Public Relations Office /ISPR/, the helicopter crashed during takeoff due to a technical malfunction.
“The commission investigating was tasked with determining the exact technical cause of the accident,” the ISPR statement said.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the helicopter crash, offering sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.
