Bishkek, June 5 /Xin Hua/ — In recent years, China has taken numerous practical measures to respond to climate change and is actively developing international cooperation in this area, which is of great significance for the sustainable development of the world. This was stated in an interview with Xin Hua by Kyrgyz ecologist, chairman of the public fund “Green Energy” Anarkul Sultangazieva.

June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day. This year it is dedicated to climate change. In September last year, China announced new targets related to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC): by 2035, it plans to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions in the overall economy by 7-10%. Compared to peak levels, aiming to achieve even greater success, to increase the share of inexhaustible energy carriers in total energy consumption to more than 30%, to increase the installed capacity of wind and solar power plants by more than six times compared to the level of 2020, aiming to bring the total indicator to 3.6 billion kW, as well as to increase the volume of forest resources to more than 24 billion cubic meters.

According to A. Sultangazieva, being one of the largest economies and a major energy consumer in the world, China today plays a key role in global climate policy. “Any additional commitments by China under the UNFCCC are extremely important for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and containing global warming,” she believes.

The expert particularly noted that China did not limit itself to fulfilling previously announced commitments but voluntarily raised its climate goals until 2035. “This demonstrates the country’s approach to leadership policy in the field of climate sustainability and green development. As an ecologist, this pleases and inspires me in my work. China is an example and an important strategic partner for many developed and developing countries,” said A. Sultangaziev.

China, within the framework of the UNFCCC, has also put forward new goals. The country plans to position vehicles powered by new energy sources as leaders in sales of new transportation means, expand the national carbon trading market quotas for CO2 emissions to all major sectors with high emission levels, and primarily create a society adapted to climate change.

“China is effectively forming a large market for the green economy and accelerating the global energy transition. This influences not only the reduction of emissions within the country but also the lowering of the cost of green technologies worldwide, including solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems,” said the ecologist.

The expert pointed out that no less important is China’s focus on adapting to climate change and creating a climate-resilient society. “Today the world is facing not only the task of reducing emissions, but also the inevitability of adapting to already occurring climate changes — droughts, glacier melting, water shortages, extreme weather events. For countries in the region, this aspect is especially relevant,” she emphasized.

“China’s actions also have practical significance for Kyrgyzstan. The development of Chinese technologies in the field of renewable energy, electric transport, energy efficiency, and carbon regulation opens up opportunities for regional cooperation, attracting investment, and implementing green technologies,” noted A. Sultangaziyeva.

From her perspective, on a global scale, China’s new targets within the framework of the UNFCCC send an important signal that the fight against climate change remains a priority even amid the current complex international situation. “This strengthens the consensus of the international climate process and increases the likelihood that other countries will also strengthen their own climate commitments,” the expert is confident.

At the moment, China has signed dozens of documents on South-South cooperation in the field of climate change with developing countries. The Chinese Meteorological Administration has conducted more than 300 training courses on South-South cooperation in combating climate change, during which over 10,000 specialists were trained.

“The support that China provides to developing countries, including my own, within the framework of South-South cooperation on climate change issues, is today of exceptional importance, especially for states that are most vulnerable to climate risks and at the same time have limited financial and technological capabilities for adapting to climate change,” believes A. Sultangaziev.

The given data indicate that China is one of the key partner countries of the Global South in the field of sustainable development and climate security, the agency added. According to the agency’s interlocutor, access to climate technologies, specialist training, and international investments is becoming the most important element in ensuring national and regional sustainability.

A. Sultangazieva also noted that the CIS within the framework of South-South cooperation promotes the principle of climate justice, which is necessary for the sustainable development of the modern world.

“Support from such major economies as China helps reduce imbalances and expands the capabilities of countries to achieve Sustainable Development Goals,” he said. In the expert’s opinion, in a global context, such actions by the BRICS contribute to strengthening international solidarity, increasing trust between states, and accelerating collective efforts to combat the climate crisis. –0–
