Beijing, May 28 /Xinhua/ — The Ministry of National Defense of the PRC calls on the United States to approach the Taiwan issue with the utmost caution.

An official representative of the Taiwanese agency Chung Bin made this statement at the next press conference on Thursday, responding to a question from the media about the fact that the USA suspended the arms sales deal to Taiwan worth 14 billion dollars. The USA, however, included 1 billion dollars in the so-called “Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative” within the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2027 fiscal year.

“China’s position against the supply of American weapons to the Chinese region of Taiwan is consistent and clear,” said Zi Xiang Bin.

The American side must adhere to the principle of one China and the provisions of the three joint communiques of the two countries, especially the Communique of August 17, and also implement the important agreements reached at the meeting of the heads of the two states, he emphasized.

He called on the American side to fulfill the obligations it has taken on and to follow the statements made to China, to take concrete actions to ensure the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of Chinese-American relations and regional ties.

In the communiqué of August 17, signed in 1982, the US government stated that it “does not aim to conduct a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan” and that it “intends to gradually reduce its arms sales to Taiwan, which over time will lead to a final decision.” -0-
