New York, May 27 /Xinhua/ — China consistently believes that its relations with Panama are not directed against any third party and should not be undermined by any third party. This was stated on Tuesday by a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC Wang Yi at a meeting with the head of Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Javier Martinez-Ache, held on the sidelines of a United Nations Security Council high-level meeting.
China and Panama are connected by a long history of exchanges, said Wan Yi, adding that in the 19th century a large number of Chinese workers went to Panama to help build railways and dig canals, contributing to the socio-economic development of the Central American country.
According to him, over the course of almost nine years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral ties have generally developed smoothly, bringing tangible benefits to the Panamanian people.
Facts have fully proven that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Panama corresponds to the long-term interests of both countries and reflects the will of the peoples and the trends of the times, the minister noted.
Adherence to the One China principle is the political basis of China-Panama diplomatic relations. China has repeatedly valued the Panamanian leadership’s commitment to this principle and its refusal to grant Taiwan any space for activity, said Wang Yi.
Chinese enterprises have been operating in Panama for many years, making an important contribution to the country’s economic growth and improving the living conditions of its people, he said, noting that Beijing hopes Panama will effectively protect the legal rights and interests of Chinese businesses.
H. Martínez-Acha, in turn, noted that China is an important force in defending multilateralism, to which Panama is also committed.
According to him, Panama attaches great importance to relations with China, fully realizes the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, will steadfastly adhere to the one-China policy, and will not allow Taiwan to establish any institutions in Panama.
Panama is ready to work with China to look to the future, resolve disagreements through constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, strengthen trust, and open a new chapter in relations between the two countries, he said. –0–
