Washington, May 24 /Xin Hua/ — U.S. Secret Service agents on Saturday shot a man who approached a checkpoint near the White House and opened fire on officers. This was reported by American media.
A lockdown was declared at the White House. An accidental passerby received a gunshot wound and, reportedly, is in critical condition.
The suspect, who later died in the hospital, was characterized by the American media as an “emotionally unstable person.”
The incident occurred at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street near the White House grounds.
“I was shooting a video on my iPhone for social media on the North Lawn of the White House when we heard gunshots. It seemed like dozens of shots were fired. We were ordered to run into the press briefing room, where we remain now,” said ABC News correspondent at the White House, Celina Van.
