Beijing, May 24 /Xinhua/ — Media cooperation between Russia and China plays an exceptionally important, multi-level role in bilateral relations, especially in the context of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of partnership and strategic interaction relations and the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. This was stated in a written interview with Xinhua by Svetlana Balanova, General Director of the Russian National Media Group (NMG).
NMG is the largest private media holding company in Russia. It includes leaders of the media market in the production and distribution of news and entertainment content for all media platforms, in the development of technologies and the creation of innovative solutions in the field of advertising. In recent years, NMG has been actively cooperating with leading Chinese media, including the Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group (CMG), and China Daily.
“Joint media projects, exchanges between journalists and editorial offices contribute to the formation among the populations of both countries of an objective and benevolent understanding of each other, which is especially important in the conditions of global informational competition and the modern geopolitical situation,” noted S. Balanova.
“Regular coverage of cooperation, cultural exchanges, and joint initiatives helps to strengthen trust and understanding between our peoples,” said the agency’s interlocutor. “Media cooperation provides informational support for large joint projects — economic, educational, cultural — which contributes to their successful implementation and popularization.”
According to her, the exchange of experience, joint forums, round tables, and media schools contribute to the professional growth of journalists and the development of new formats of interaction. “In the conditions of a complex international situation, the joint efforts of the media help to promptly respond to attempts of disinformation and to form a unified position on key issues,” said S. Balanova.
As an example of a high level of media cooperation, our interlocutor noted the regular Russia-China media forum, where Xin Hua acts as a co-organizer. “The 6th forum took place in December 2025 in Beijing, bringing together a large number of media from both countries,” she said.
With the participation of NMG, the film “Red Silk” was created — a joint Russian-Chinese retro detective action movie of 2025. “This film has generally become a new symbol of cultural ties between our countries, gaining national status both in Russia and China. It gathered its audience of fans of the historical detective action genre in both countries, becoming at the same time the most successful Russian film in the international box office for 2025,” said S. Balanova.
In her opinion, the success of “Red Silk” shows that joint films work. “It is necessary to expand joint production to series, documentaries, animation for adults. Historical reconstructions, popular science content are areas where both our countries hold leading positions. And of course, in our time of technological development, it is important to develop technological partnership between the media of both countries,” said S. Balanova.
During the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China, NMG announced the expansion of cooperation with its Chinese partners. “The further expansion of our joint work will allow us to introduce Russian and Chinese audiences to the best examples of content from both countries, improve the accuracy and depth of event coverage, and contribute to the development of a bilateral cultural and informational dialogue between our countries, as well as jointly develop a technological agenda,” the NMG interlocutor Xin Hua noted.
In the opinion of S. Balanova, in the conditions of a complex international information environment, coordination between Russian and Chinese media should be built on the translation of the shared audience of the mass media of the two countries of the current world picture, qualitative, confirmed, multicultural analytics, inaccessible to many Western media due to editorial restrictions and bias. She noted that manifestations of such coordination can be the exchange of exclusive materials, analytics, and expert comments for the formation of a unified information agenda and the creation of mechanisms for the operational exchange of information about fakes and information attacks.
S. Balanova added that it is important to jointly promote positive narratives, actively highlighting the successes and achievements of both countries, as well as constructive initiatives on the international stage in order to jointly defend justice, counter double standards, and strengthen their voice in the international agenda. –0–
