UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern in connection with reports that, as a result of a drone strike on Sunday at the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the power generator caught fire.
“I have consistently warned about the danger of further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, and this incident is yet another reason for a complete cessation of hostilities,” said the head of the UN.
Guterres emphasized that attacks near civilian infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, are unacceptable and violate international law.
At the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it was reported on the eve that the UAE authorities informed the agency: the radiation level at the nuclear power plant remains normal, there are no casualties.
According to IAEA data, the electrical generator located outside the internal perimeter of the station caught fire. Currently, the power supply of the third power unit is provided by emergency diesel generators. The agency is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining constant contact with UAE authorities to provide assistance if necessary.
MAGATE Director General Rafael Grossi stated that he is deeply concerned about the incident and emphasized the inadmissibility of any military activity threatening nuclear safety. He again called on parties to exercise “maximum restraint” near nuclear facilities to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.
