UN, May 16 /Xinhua/ — China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, on Friday at the Security Council called for the promotion of an inclusive political settlement in Syria.
The international community as a whole expects that Syria will end armed conflicts, restore order, establish inclusive governance, and ensure equal rights through a political process, Fu Cun said.
China calls on all parties in Syria to focus on the common interests of the people, show mutual tolerance, and resolve tensions and disagreements through broad dialogue and consultations, said the diplomat.
According to him, the key to achieving stability in Syria is the eradication of terrorism.
Although the overall level of violence in the country has decreased, the security situation remains unstable, the post-representative noted. Terrorist groups in Syria often create problems, seriously threatening peace and security both in Syria and in the entire region, he added.
“We call on the Syrian government to fulfill its international obligations, to translate political commitments into concrete measures and actions, and to take all effective steps for a firm fight against all international terrorist groups listed by the Security Council, including the ‘Islamic Movement of Eastern Turkestan,'” said Fu Cun.
The restoration of peace and development in Syria cannot be achieved without a stable external environment, emphasized the diplomat. The international community must adhere to the UN Charter and the fundamental norms of international relations, support the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria, he noted. The Golan Heights are recognized by the international community as occupied Syrian territory, and Israel must cease all military operations on Syrian soil and immediately withdraw from Syrian territory, Fu Cun said.
