UN, May 16 /Sina/ — Despite the ceasefire that has been ongoing for almost a month, daily reports are received about attacks affecting civilians and emergency response workers in Lebanon. This was reported on Thursday by UN humanitarian organizations.
On Wednesday, as a result of a series of drone strikes on vehicles in the Jiyah area, approximately 20 km south of the capital Beirut, at least eight people were killed, including two children, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs /OCHA/ reported, citing data from the Lebanese authorities.
According to the Ministry of Health of Lebanon, since the last escalation of the conflict on March 2, at least 2,896 people have died, including 200 children, and more than 8,000 have been injured, added the UNHCR.
According to the authorities, due to the worsening security situation, the number of internally displaced persons continues to grow across the country. Almost 130 thousand people have been accommodated in 632 collective shelters.
“Humanitarian partners report that the increase in the number of refugees is facilitated both by recently displaced families and by those returning to the shelter,” reads the UNHCR statement. “The lack of security and the scale of destruction still hinder safe and sustainable returns.”
The UK Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that access for humanitarian organizations and cargo remains possible, but limited, especially in southern Lebanon, where damaged roads and bridges, unexploded ammunition, destruction left after the conflict, as well as an unsafe situation hinder movement and prevent the restoration of basic services.
According to the authorities, since the beginning of the escalation of the conflict, 132 humanitarian convoys with first aid supplies have been provided.
