Beijing, May 12 /Xinhua/ — On Tuesday, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Cai Zelin held a meeting in Beijing with Khaled al-Anani, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Si Zhinpin emphasized that UNESCO makes an important contribution to strengthening mutual understanding and trust among peoples, as well as to exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, playing an active role in the reform and improvement of global governance in the fields of education, science, and culture.

According to the Chairman of the CPC, China actively supports the work of UNESCO, and both sides have done much to protect peace worldwide and to promote global development. He expressed China’s readiness to deepen strategic cooperation with UNESCO so that it brings more benefits to the peoples of all countries.

Noting that global governance has found itself at a new crossroads, Xi Jinping emphasized that China adheres to the practice of genuine multilateralism, supports and defends the authority of the United Nations, and also supports the important role of UNESCO in global governance.

As the chairman of the CPC stated, China is ready to jointly implement with UNESCO four major global initiatives and to promote ensuring that the peoples of all countries benefit from achievements in the fields of education, science, and culture, more effectively responding to common challenges facing humanity, and jointly building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The Chinese leader called on both sides to deepen cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), open science, and digital education, to advocate for respect for the diversity of world civilizations, to promote mutual respect and harmonious coexistence of different civilizations, to strengthen cooperation with countries of the Global South, to facilitate the sharing of cultural heritage, inter-civilizational exchanges, and mutual learning.

H. al-Anani, in turn, stated that he hopes to unite all member states to promote dialogue and cooperation, facilitate mutual understanding and mutual learning among civilizations.

Thanking China for the long-term and significant support of UNESCO, H. al-Anani noted that the organization plans to strengthen coordination with China to enhance the global level of education and culture, stimulate scientific and technological exchanges, deepen cooperation in the field of AI, jointly implement four major global initiatives, and bring even more benefits to humanity. –0–
