Canberra, May 1 /Xin Hua/ — On Thursday in the Northern Territory of Australia, riots occurred following the arrest of a man accused of murdering a five-year-old girl from an indigenous family.

The girl went missing on April 25 from her home in an Aboriginal community on the outskirts of Alice Springs. Her body was discovered by police on Thursday.

On Thursday evening, the Northern Territory police reported that 47-year-old Aboriginal man Jefferson Lewis was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A man was beaten by local residents and found unconscious by the police. Subsequently, he was taken to Alice Springs hospital, where about 400 people had gathered demanding “retribution.”

Rasplata is a custom of the indigenous population of Australia, in which elders or victims impose physical, and sometimes even capital, punishment on a member of the community who has broken the law.

Protesters set fire to a police car, damaged ambulances, and threw various objects at law enforcement officers.

The Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dowle told Australian television on Friday that police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

According to him, J. Lewis was transported to the capital of the Northern Territory, the city of Darwin, on Friday morning for security reasons.

The police reported that charges against the suspect will be filed on Friday or Saturday.
