Phnom Penh, May 1 /Xinhua/ — A water supply system built by a Chinese company was opened on Thursday in Battambang province in northwestern Cambodia. This became a significant step towards expanding access to clean water and meeting the growing demand in this area.
The project was co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the French Development Agency, the European Union, and the government of Cambodia. The total cost amounted to approximately 31.77 million US dollars, according to a press release from the local Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The facility was constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The work was carried out from October 2022 to December 2025.
The modernized system includes water intake and water treatment facilities, as well as a 94-kilometer distribution network. “The project strengthens the city’s water supply infrastructure, more than doubling the capacity of the Battambang water utility and expanding coverage to about 76 percent of the service area,” the press release says.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation of Cambodia, Hem Vanndi, stated that the new system has increased the production capacity of the Battambang water utility from 33,520 to 83,520 cubic meters per day.
The project provides safe and reliable water supply, improves public health, and supports local economic growth, emphasized the ADB director in Cambodia, Yasmin Siddiqui.
