UN, May 1 /Xin Hua/ — The UN Security Council on Thursday adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for one year until April 30, 2027, while reducing the maximum number of the peacekeeping contingent.
Resolution 2820 received support from 13 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council; China and Russia abstained.
Clarifying the voting motives, representatives of both countries expressed regret over how the USA, which is the author of the draft resolution, acted. They stated that they support the extension of the UNMISS mandate but cannot agree with the reduction of the maximum contingent size and the attempt to pressure the government of South Sudan, contained in the document.
According to the resolution, the maximum size of the military contingent will be reduced from 17 thousand to 12.5 thousand people, but at the same time the maximum size of the police contingent remains at the level of 2101 people.
The document notes that the UN Security Council is ready to consider the issue of further adjustment of the size of the UN peacekeeping contingent and the tasks envisaged by the mandate, taking into account the security situation on the ground and the cooperation of the government with the mission.
