Vancouver, May 1 /Xin Hua/ — President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Gianni Infantino confirmed on Thursday that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will host its matches in the United States, as initially planned.
J. Infantino made this statement at the 76th FIFA Congress at the Vancouver Conference Centre. Football officials from around the world gathered here to discuss the organization of the tournament, changes in the rules, and preparation for the upcoming event.
Speaking about Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup against the backdrop of recent regional tensions, G. Infantino said: “I want to confirm that Iran will participate in the 2026 World Cup and, of course, Iran will play in the USA.”
Earlier, Iranian officials proposed moving their group stage matches from the USA to Mexico. However, FIFA rejected this proposal. Representatives of the US government recently welcomed the participation of the Iranian national team in the upcoming World Cup.
Vancouver is preparing to host one of the stages of the first FIFA World Cup with the participation of 48 teams. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. –0–
