Beijing, April 30 /Xin Hua/ — China hopes that Belgium will play an active and constructive role within the framework of the European Union, contributing to the proper resolution of trade and economic disagreements between the EU and China through dialogue and consultations. This was stated on Thursday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, Wan Yi.

Wan Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made a corresponding statement during the negotiations in Beijing with the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders.

Noting that China and Belgium have established comprehensive friendly cooperation and partnership relations, Van Yi stated that the parties have a broad range of common interests, advocate for the political resolution of disputes through dialogue, and for compliance with international law norms.

As the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC indicated, the Chinese side expects to jointly adhere with the Belgian side to mutual respect, seek common ground while reserving differences, maintain close dialogue and communication, deepen mutual understanding and mutual trust, strengthen cultural and humanitarian exchanges, actively identify potential for practical cooperation, and facilitate the elevation of China-Belgium relations to a new height.

The parties exchanged views on acute international and regional problems of mutual interest. Van I set out the fundamental position of China, and M. Prevo in turn highly appreciated the efforts of the Chinese side aimed at easing regional tension and its commitment to resolving problems through dialogue, stating Belgium’s intention to maintain close communication with the PRC.

M. Preve noted that Belgian-Chinese relations today are more important than ever before. As he emphasized, the Belgian side consistently adheres to the one-China policy and observes the relevant UN resolutions.

Touching on trade and economic issues, the head of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Belgian side does not approve of protectionism and is ready, on the basis of a positive, open, and constructive approach, to strengthen communication and dialogue with the Chinese side and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation.

Belgium is also ready together with China to defend multilateralism, protect international law, and play an active role in promoting the healthy development of European-Chinese relations, added M. Prevo. –0–
