UN Secretary-General António Guterres is deeply concerned about reports of attacks in several areas of Mali. He strongly condemned these acts of violence and emphasized the necessity to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
On Saturday in Mali, a series of attacks by extremists and separatist rebels occurred. Reports indicated shootings and explosions in the capital Bamako and in the vicinity of a large military base outside the capital, as well as in the central region of the country and in the northern city of Kidal.
On Sunday, reports of the clashes continued to arrive from Mali.
Attacks by Tuareg rebel groups seeking to create a separate state were mainly recorded in the north, while armed groups associated with “Al-Qaeda” and ISIS carried out attacks on settlements across the country.
The UN Secretary-General noted that a coordinated international support is necessary to counter the growing threat of violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel region. He called for close coordination and cooperation in the field of security throughout the entire region.
