Main news of the day at the UN and worldwide: UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, a fourth UN peacekeeper from Indonesia was killed in Lebanon, two-thirds of all hungry people in the world live in 10 countries, and the UN marks the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy.
Ceasefire extension between Israel and Lebanon
The UN Secretary-General welcomes the statement on the extension of the ceasefire agreement for three weeks, aimed at creating conditions for dialogue between Lebanon and Israel, and highly appreciates the role of the United States in facilitating this extension. He once again affirms the United Nations’ support for all efforts directed at ending hostilities and alleviating the suffering of the population on both sides of the “blue line.” Guterres expressed hope that the ceasefire agreement will help achieve a comprehensive peace in the region.
Death of a UN peacekeeper
The UN reports the death of the fourth Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Corporal Riko Pramudia sustained serious injuries as a result of an incident on March 29, when a shell exploded at one of the peacekeepers’ positions. Preliminary findings from the mission’s investigation indicate that the shell was fired from an “Merkava” tank of the Israel Defense Forces. As a result of recent incidents amid hostilities between Hezbollah and Israeli armed forces, six peacekeepers have already died. The UN Secretary-General once again called on all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and inviolability of UN personnel.
Hunger has become a constant global problem
Hunger is concentrated in a small group of countries affected by war and instability, according to a new report prepared by UN agencies, the European Union, and its partners. As of 2025, two-thirds of all people worldwide facing acute food insecurity live in just 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria. The report’s authors paint a troubling picture: hunger has ceased to be a series of short-term emergencies and has become a persistent global problem. According to forecasts, the situation will not improve in 2026.
Diplomacy Day
Today at the UN, International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is observed. Multilateralism lies at the core of the UN’s activities. As the Secretary-General noted, the UN Charter remains the “moral compass” of the international community on the path to peace. And on Saturday, International Day of Diplomats is celebrated. At the UN, appreciation is expressed to diplomats who, through negotiations and cooperation, embody the ideals of the United Nations Organization.
