Beijing, April 21 /Xinhua/ — In the first quarter of 2026, the volume of mutual trade between residents of the border areas of China and Russia in the city of Manzhouli /an autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, Northern China/ amounted to 41,100 tons in quantitative terms and 163 million yuan /about 23.8 million USD/ in value terms, which turned out to be 153.46% and 133.46% more respectively compared to the same period last year, reported the Chinese daily newspaper “Neimenggu Ribao” on Tuesday.
In particular, the volume of such trade in the automobile freight transportation zone reached 847.64 tons worth 16 million yuan, which attracted the participation of 2,100 residents of border areas; in the railway freight transportation zone, the indicator reached 40,200 tons totaling 147 million yuan, with the number of residents of border areas participating in the trade amounting to 18,900 person-times.
Two years ago, officially began to function a mutual trade zone between residents of border areas at the Manzhouli railway checkpoint, which became the first such zone in Inner Mongolia. Together with the already existing mutual trade zone at the automobile checkpoint, they created a “two-motor” system facilitating the development of this type of trade in the city of Manzhouli.
Currently, the mutual trade zone at the Manzhouli railway checkpoint relies on local enterprises producing grain for mutual trade, paying special attention to the trade of agricultural products such as flaxseed, sunflower seeds, and oats. Meanwhile, the mutual trade zone at the automobile checkpoint is continuously engaged in the import of cedar nuts, sunflower oil, and other types of goods.
Local authorities have implemented a model of “mutual trade between residents of border areas + on-site processing,” whereby registered processing enterprises in the border area use imported raw materials to produce products with higher added value.
At present, in Manzhouli, the creation of four processing enterprises has been approved within the framework of mutual trade between residents of border areas. Being an important driver for the development of border areas and the improvement of the incomes of their residents, deals in this category of trade have already spread to more than a thousand product names, including grain, edible oil, and fresh food products.
Let us remind you that at the beginning of this month, the general plan for the Chinese pilot free trade zone in Inner Mongolia was announced. On April 14, a mobilization meeting was held dedicated to the construction of a part of this zone in the city of Manzhouli.
In accordance with the plan, the Manzhouli part of the above-mentioned zone will focus efforts on the development of industries such as processing of imported resources, cross-border tourism, cross-border finance and services at the China-Russia border, in order to create an important window to strengthen China’s ties with Northeast Asia and Europe, as well as an important platform for cooperation between China, Russia, and Mongolia. -0-
