MOSCOW — The Moscow Metro is developing interactive services for passengers, turning trips into a comfortable cultural and educational space. The capital’s subway offers city residents and tourists free access to thousands of electronic and audiobooks directly at stations and on the go.
The architectural metro station “Rasskazovka” has become the center of the literary space; its interior is designed as a giant library. The station’s columns are shaped like sliding filing cabinet drawers, and the walls are stylized as bookshelves. By scanning QR codes on the design elements, passengers can download classic and contemporary literature for free.
The “Books in the Metro” project has expanded far beyond a single station. Free access to online libraries via QR codes is being gradually rolled out at metro stations, the Moscow Central Circle, souvenir shops, and “Live Communication” stands. Additionally, as part of the “These Are Books.” project launched with the Yandex Books service, a free online library of 1,000 works has become available on all 750 routes of buses and electric buses. Among the most popular genres with passengers are classics, self-development, and detective stories, with the top 5 including works by Kahneman, Prymachenko, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, and Pushkin.
“By the order of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we are creating the most comfortable and intelligent environment in the city’s transport. Unique architectural solutions, such as the library-station “Rasskazovka,” combined with digital technologies, allow millions of passengers to read books for free while traveling, combining advanced services and the culture of reading,” said Moscow Deputy Mayor for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov.
