On the section of Gilyarovsky Street before the exit to the outer side of the Garden Ring, the lane markings were redone according to the project by specialists from the Moscow Government’s Center for Traffic Management (CTM). Thanks to this, the traffic capacity increased: instead of two lanes before the intersection, there are now three available.
“Under the Traffic Management Center’s project, the traffic pattern on Gilyarovskogo Street before the Garden Ring was changed. Previously, there were two lanes here, which caused delays during peak hours, and drivers often needed two to three traffic light cycles to pass the intersection. Now, three lanes have been arranged before exiting. According to our specialists’ calculations, the capacity of the section has increased by 40 percent, and travel time for several thousand motorists per day has been reduced by four to six minutes. The new scheme allows the accumulated traffic flow to pass in one traffic light cycle. We continue to improve traffic in the capital on the instructions of Sergey Sobyanin as part of the transport development strategy until 2030,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Gilyarovsky Street provides exit to the outer side of the Garden Ring. Previously, before the intersection, there were two lanes for turning right here. From the far right lane, drivers could exit onto the Garden Ring’s service road — towards the parking or in the direction of Shchepkina Street.
Due to heavy traffic and the short green light phase, drivers were not always able to pass the intersection in one cycle. Sometimes they had to wait for two or three cycles.
At the request of residents, specialists from the Traffic Management Center checked the section and developed a re-marking project to increase the exit capacity. A third lane was arranged before the intersection. Now all three lanes are designated for turning right onto the outer side of the Garden Ring. At the same time, it is still possible to exit to the service road from the extreme right lane.
It was not necessary to change the traffic light settings: thanks to the third lane, all the vehicles accumulated before the intersection now manage to enter the Garden Ring in a single cycle.
An additional lane was arranged on a stretch 50 meters long. This is enough to accommodate cars waiting for the traffic light to turn green. The new scheme also creates a more convenient alternative for exiting to the Garden Ring via Prospekt Mira.
