As part of the large-scale project “Moscow — City of Cinema,” the capital is relaunching one of the oldest studios in the country — the Gorky Film Studio. Sergey Sobyanin spoke about how it is being modernized in his blog.

“In 2023, the studio became city property in a critical condition. The wear of the historic site on Sergei Eisenstein Street exceeded 60 percent, and the buildings on Valdaysky Passage were practically in a pre-emergency state. In a rather large complex, only about 10 thousand square meters of space were actually used. Nevertheless, thanks to the efforts of the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Gorky Film Studio continued to operate and had good potential for revival. It was only necessary to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Which we did,” wrote the Mayor of Moscow.

As a result of a large-scale modernization over two to three years, the total area of the studio’s operating pavilions has increased by more than 10 times — to 106,000 square meters. Thanks to this, production volumes have increased fivefold. The film studio is now rightfully considered one of the key facilities of the Moscow film cluster.

What has been done and what still lies ahead

At the historical site on Sergei Eisenstein Street, facilities with a total area of over 15,000 square meters were repaired and constructed.

Among them are a new production complex, a laboratory building, and a service center. The costume and prop center was refurbished, increasing its area to 2,500 square meters. Staff manually created unique looks for the new film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace,” which will be released in theaters in February next year.

“At the same time, we carefully preserve the studio’s heritage. Over the year, we digitized more than five thousand archival negatives, rare photographs, and documents. The main attraction of the site on Eisenstein Street has become the multifunctional ‘Gorky Hall’ with 300 seats. In a year, 67 major events were held here, including the 5th Original+ streaming platforms content festival and the presentation of the new industry award ‘Workshop. Behind the Scenes’,” noted Sergey Sobyanin.

Currently, major renovation work is underway on the historic site’s old pavilions. After its completion, seven modern filming stages offering a full range of services for film production will operate here.

A new studio and production complex with an area of over 56 thousand square meters has been built on Valdaysky Proezd, which is twice as spacious as the old buildings that had fallen into a pre-emergency condition. It has all the facilities for the full cycle of producing movies, series, and TV programs.

The site features 10 high-tech transformable shooting stages ranging from 500 to 2,300 square meters. They are soundproofed: filming can take place simultaneously in each without interference.

“The new buildings also house virtual set studios (a more advanced version of the green screen chroma key), motion capture, editing, and color correction. All technological processes are automated: filming in several studios can be managed from a single control room. Moreover, the unique visual technology center allows content to be edited in real time right on wheels. In addition, the studios can be connected to mobile TV stations for live broadcasts,” emphasized the Mayor of Moscow.

The modernization increased the demand for the site. Over three years, about 20 major projects were filmed and released here, including the films “Chizhik-Pyzhik Returns,” “How I Met Her Mom,” the drama “Vera,” and the New Year’s blockbuster “Letter to Santa Claus.”

Work is underway on the creation of more than 20 additional films, including the family comedy “The Tale of Lost Time,” the continuation of the legendary story “Petrov and Vasechkin. Heroes of Our Time,” the sports film “The Big Wave,” and the fantasy drama “Diva.”

At the same time, complex staged projects are being created in the complex’s pavilions, such as the vocal show “Come on, all together!”, the sports reality show “Titans”, as well as sci-fi series and historical dramas.

Thanks to the new infrastructure, popular science cinema began to revive. The documentary projects “Service of the Sun” and “Our Fragile Happiness” are already being shown across the country, and the research film “Fungal Kingdom” is being prepared for release.

Film campus and educational tours

At the Gorky Film Studio, the film campus—a youth creative space for training future film masters—has been relaunched. It has been equipped with modern equipment, just like all the shooting studios.

“The kids now have access to their own virtual production and sound recording studios, green screen studios, and modern classes in editing, animation, and computer graphics. The Gorky Film Studio’s film campus implements various program formats for children from eight years old, covering directions such as ‘Film Actor,’ ‘Film Production,’ ‘Voice Acting and Dubbing,’ ‘Comics and Manga,’ and ‘Creating Video Content for Blogs.’ Thanks to the new creative space, children from the age of eight can go through the entire process from the idea to the film editing under the guidance of professionals,” explained Sergey Sobyanin.

Anyone interested can try their hand for free during the open days and find out which of the long-term programs they like the most.

In the past academic year and during the holidays, more than 1,600 kids studied acting, producing, and filmmaking at the film campus.

Gorky Film Studio is also becoming an accessible educational center for cinema enthusiasts. Anyone interested can come here for educational excursions and see with their own eyes the legendary costumes from the films “Frosty the Snowman”, “Officers”, “Seventeen Moments of Spring”, “Guest from the Future”, “Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors” and many other movies.

Since the beginning of 2026, five film festivals, two awards ceremonies, and five industry conferences have taken place at the Gorky Film Studio.
