In the autumn season, the salt industry of Changlu Hanggu on the shore of the Bohai Sea enters its most intense salt harvesting season. The vast salt fields, covering an area of ten thousand mu (about 667 hectares), sparkle like mirrors; in each basin, raw salt formed after prolonged crystallization is collected. Salt workers monitor the weather and use every clear moment for work. Salt harvesting equipment buzzes between basins: salt is being collected, transported, and piled into heaps — the process does not stop for a minute.

The Changlu Hangu salt mine, known in ancient times as “Lutaichan,” was established in 925. The sea salt mined here is renowned for its excellent quality and known as “Lutai jasper sand.” Over more than a thousand years, the area of the mines and production methods have changed repeatedly, but the technology—channeling water into basins, evaporation by the sun, and salt crystallization—has remained unchanged. In 2024, the ancient Changlu Hangu salt mine was included in the sixth list of China’s national industrial heritage.

In recent years, the Changlu Hangu salt industry has been actively developing industrial tourism: the cultural and tourist area of Changlu sea salt, built on its basis, successfully obtained the status of a 4A-level tourist zone in 2024. During the National Day holidays this year, the Changlu sea salt cultural and tourist area received about 3,000 tourists daily.

Salt workers remain loyal to the salt flats and year after year collect the gift of the sea — sea salt. Tourists come one after another to touch the salt culture with their own hands, a culture that has been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. Under the sea breeze and sunlight, ancient salt trades continue to live and radiate new life energy.
