In Russia, October 8 is celebrated as Additional Education Worker’s Day. These specialists help children to reveal their talents. Today, there are more than 140,000 clubs and sections operating for Moscow schoolchildren. Among them are many unusual and modern fields: artificial intelligence, underwater robotics, biological forensics, and other programs. This was reported by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.
“Additional education is actively developing in the capital so that every child can find an activity of interest and reveal talents in various fields. Special attention is given to modern directions—it is important that schoolchildren already today can master artificial intelligence and other technologies that will be in demand in the future. At the same time, the range of activities is becoming increasingly diverse, with new unusual programs appearing, for example in underwater robotics, biological forensics, kitchen biochemistry. The children will create chatbots, learn to control quadcopters, delve into DNA analysis, and much more. In addition, sports clubs operate in schools, uniting almost 350 thousand young Muscovites. They have access to 67 types of sports. Besides traditional ones—football, chess, rhythmic gymnastics—the popularity of go, rock climbing, and gorodki is growing. In total, more than 140 thousand clubs and sections are open for city students. More than 1.5 million children attend them—almost 90 percent of schoolchildren,” said Anastasia Rakova.
One of the actively developing areas of extracurricular education is information technology. Children are taught the basics of computer vision and neural network technologies in the Python programming language. Also, using artificial intelligence, children create objects and characters in a computer game, learn to generate images, animations, videos, texts, and voices. In addition, schoolchildren can develop their own chatbot, mini-game, or voice assistant.
Among the unusual technical sections is underwater robotics. The kids are taught to program robots and control them in water. There is also a program open for schoolchildren on FPV piloting and drone racing, where they study quadcopter design.
One of the interesting natural science clubs is kitchen biochemistry. Using culinary processes as examples, young Muscovites are explained what protein denaturation is, how fermentation, crystallization, and emulsion formation occur. And in the program on biological forensics, schoolchildren immerse themselves in the basics of dactyloscopy (fingerprint study), traceology (trace examination), forensic chemistry, and DNA analysis.
For art lovers, there are craft clubs, such as bobbin lace making — using special wooden sticks around which threads are wound, and with their help, lace patterns are created by hand.
In addition, children can participate in school sports clubs in various disciplines — from army hand-to-hand combat and rhythmic gymnastics to gorodki and tag rugby. Competitions are held for participants in 20 sports — these competitions are called school leagues. They consist of two stages: qualifying rounds among interdistrict teams and a final among the leaders. The winners of the final competitions earn the right to represent the capital in the all-Russian competitions.
