Novosibirsk State University and Kim Il Sung University have signed an agreement to open an office (representative office) of the North Korean university. It will be located on the territory of NSU. This will be the first representative office of a North Korean university in Russia. The office will be fully operational by the end of 2026, and student exchange and internship programs for young scientists will start next year.

The signing of the agreement took place during the visit of the delegation from Novosibirsk State University, headed by the rector, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Dmitry Pyshny to Pyongyang at the end of September. The purpose of the visit was to participate in anniversary events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Kim Il Sung University, as well as in the Second Forum of Rectors of Korean and Russian universities. Delegations from Russia, China, Mongolia, Belarus, and Singapore attended these events.

— In October-November of this year, we expect the arrival of professors from Kim Il Sung University to teach Korean language to our students. It is also planned to organize Korean language courses and introduce everyone interested to the history, culture, and traditions of the DPRK as part of the activities of the NSU Korean Center. In addition, a delegation visit is planned to handle organizational matters for opening the office. By the end of 2026, the representation of the North Korean university will be fully operational at NSU., — he commented Evgeny Sagaydak, head of the education export department at NSU.

The main purpose of the representative office’s activities will be to organize scientific and educational cooperation between NSU, institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Kim Il Sung University. Priority areas will include student exchanges and scientific internships for young scientists from the DPRK at Novosibirsk State University and the Siberian Branch RAS research institutes. The key fields for joint projects are identified as chemistry, physics, mathematics, information technology, and new materials.

Novosibirsk State University is actively developing cooperation with North Korean partners. In January 2025, a delegation from Kim Il Sung University visited NSU, and during the visit, representatives of the two universities agreed to intensify inter-university cooperation, including student and faculty mobility, joint scientific conferences, and research. Last autumn, NSU organized a series of lectures on Juche philosophy, attended by more than 600 students and faculty members from 15 Russian universities.

— We are open to cooperation with those who share our interest in science and education. The main principle is mutual benefit and respect. With our North Korean colleagues, we see prospects in exchanging experience, training students, and joint research. This partnership enriches both sides: we share our developments, adopt their experience, and jointly prepare specialists. I am convinced that such a dialogue is a step towards strengthening academic ties and expanding horizons for our students and scientists., — noted Evgeny Sagaidak.

In the future, it is planned to establish cooperation between the two countries at the secondary education level between the NSTU Physics and Mathematics School and one of the specialized schools in the DPRK. Novosibirsk State University expects that the first Korean students will come to the NSTU summer school as early as next year.
