111 students and postgraduates of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University became winners of the grant competition of the Committee on Science and Higher Education of St. Petersburg. Among them are 65 students and 46 postgraduates.
The largest number of winners from Polytech come from the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport — 31 people, the Engineering and Construction Institute — 28, the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade — 17. Among other leaders in the number of winners are the Humanities Institute, the Institute of Energy, the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, and the Physical-Mechanical Institute.
Polytech trusts students and graduate students to work in complex industry sectors — with hydrogen, digital twins, biomedicine, new materials. They conduct experiments, perform calculations, and create prototypes in modern laboratories and scientific teams. Such projects go beyond the university, become solutions for the city, and win competitions, — noted Natalia Leontyeva, Head of the Scientific Projects and Programs Support Department at SPbPU.
The projects cover economics, construction and architecture, mathematics and computer science, chemical technologies, materials science and metallurgy, energy, mechanical engineering, instrumentation, physics, biomedical technologies. Also included among the fields are design, philology, earth sciences, law and political science, electrical engineering, sociology, biology, mechanics, communications, chemistry, transport, electronics and radio engineering, psychology, food technologies.
Digital technologies and artificial intelligence are represented by projects on the development of multi-agent language models for technology scouting, machine learning methods, digital twins, management and monitoring systems, the application of generative artificial intelligence in design, research in cybersecurity, and blockchain systems.
In the field of materials and additive technologies, the winners are exploring carbon nanotubes, functionally graded polymer materials, corrosion protection coatings, metal alloys, and materials for additive manufacturing. Among the graduate students’ projects is the development of a domestic binder composition for Binder Jetting technology and the restoration of gas turbine engine nozzle blades using laser cladding technology.
The energy sector is represented by projects for the production and use of hydrogen at thermal power plants, improving the efficiency of gas turbines, enhancing cooling systems, and developing turbines operating on supercritical carbon dioxide, as well as research on high-voltage equipment and metal-film capacitors.
In the field of construction, infrastructure, and urban environment, the winners are working on digital modeling of buildings and historical sites, the safety of excavations, road surfaces, bridge structures, hydraulic engineering facilities, and the protection of Saint Petersburg from floods. The projects also consider the application of BIM and generative artificial intelligence, the restoration of small hydropower plants, and the creation of a digital model of the city’s transport infrastructure.
Biomedical and medical technologies include the development of a vaccine against group A streptococcus, the search for therapeutic targets for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, the creation of endoprostheses and materials for prosthetics, non-invasive monitoring of human functional status, analysis of blood pressure, and assessment of tissue oxygenation.
Environmental projects are devoted to phytoremediation of urban water bodies, reducing pollution by cyanobacteria, bioabsorption of carbon dioxide from flue gases, resource utilization of microalgae, as well as tire recycling and the development of circular logistics.
Many projects are interdisciplinary in nature: economic models are combined with digital technologies, engineering solutions with data about materials and the environment, humanities research with analysis and visualization tools. All winners work under the guidance of university faculty and researchers, as well as specialists from partner academic and industry organizations.
