World Vegetarian Day is celebrated on October 1st. The essence of a vegetarian diet is the rejection of meat, poultry, and fish. At the same time, different variations of such a diet may include dairy products, eggs, and honey. At Moscow markets, the selection of vegetables and fruits suitable for a vegetarian menu is seasonally updated. And products such as grains, oils, dairy products, and honey can be found at the markets year-round.

Autumn harvest of vegetables, fruits, and mushrooms

In autumn, the new harvest fruits appear at Moscow fairs. The stalls feature pumpkins, zucchinis, eggplants, peppers, various types of cabbage, as well as beets, carrots, turnips, and radishes. Sweet bell peppers, especially red ones, lead in vitamin C content. Among the fruits at the fairs are apples, pears, plums, and quinces, and among the berries — cranberries, lingonberries, and sea buckthorn.

At the same time, it is the peak season for forest mushrooms. At fairs in various districts of Moscow, one could buy porcini mushrooms, chanterelles, and birch bolete mushrooms. On 1905 Street, dried and fried mushrooms, as well as jam made from them, are currently sold.

Winter preparations and long shelf-life products

By late autumn, fresh fruits are gradually replaced by preserves. At fairs, you can find sauerkraut, salted cucumbers, soaked apples, and pickled mushrooms. Sauerkraut is a source of vitamin C and probiotics. They help maintain a healthy gut microbiota. Soaked apples retain pectin and vitamins thanks to natural fermentation, while salted cucumbers and pickled mushrooms are rich in dietary fiber.

At the same time, fresh greens — dill, parsley, onion, cilantro, and arugula — remain on the shelves thanks to participants of Moscow markets who grow them in greenhouses.

During this period, you can choose persimmons, pomegranates, and tangerines from fruits, as well as late varieties of apples and pears. The basis of the winter vegetable diet traditionally consists of potatoes, beets, and carrots.

Jam and preserves will help diversify the menu: raspberry, sea buckthorn, lingonberry, as well as walnut jam. Dried fruits complement the selection: dried apricots, prunes, and raisins. Another healthy product is nuts, which serve as a source of plant protein. Walnuts, hazelnuts, and almonds can be purchased at fairs on Sumsky Proezd, as well as on Kvarcevaya and Saranskaya streets.

Spring greens and summer watermelons

With the arrival of spring, radishes appear on the stalls of Moscow markets, and the selection of greens becomes richer — sorrel, wild garlic, spinach, and early cabbage are added.

In summer, farmers bring strawberries, raspberries, currants, cherries, sweet cherries, and gooseberries. The fruit range expands with peaches, apricots, and plums, and a bit later watermelons and melons join them. By mid-summer, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchinis, eggplants, sweet peppers, and corn appear for sale.

Products for the whole year

All year round at Moscow fairs, you can find everything to diversify your daily menu — not only seasonal fruits but also the usual range of products.

It is always possible to buy cold-pressed oils: sunflower, flaxseed, pumpkin, mustard, and camelina. There is no less wide a choice of cereals: millet, oatmeal, buckwheat, pearl barley, spelt, and bulgur are available for sale. They can be purchased at the fairgrounds on Profsoyuznaya Street, Akademika Lisitsyna Street, and Yablonevaya Alley.

A separate group of products consists of milk and eggs. At different fairs, natural dairy products from farms across the country are presented. For example, at the site in Berezovaya Roshcha passage, you can buy whole and baked milk, kefir, yogurts, ryazhenka, cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, and ghee butter. All these products are supplied from the Penza region.

Honey is available year-round at the fairs. It is especially beneficial for vegetarians who include it in their diet. Honey promotes better absorption of plant-based foods, serves as a source of B vitamins, and helps quickly replenish energy reserves. Beekeepers bring it from all across Russia. At the fair on Orekhovy Boulevard, 14 beekeepers from nine regions offer their products: Kirov, Tambov, Volgograd, Kemerovo, Rostov, and Voronezh regions, as well as from the republics of Adygea, Tatarstan, and Bashkortostan.

From the products presented at Moscow markets, one can prepare complete vegetarian meals at any time of the year: soups, side dishes, baked goods, desserts, and drinks.

Products are brought to Moscow markets from more than 40 regions of Russia. Specialists check them before they are sent to the stall. state veterinary service the city of Moscow.
