After the tram service was restored on Trifonovskaya Street, route No. 5 once again connected Belorussky Railway Station and the Rizhskaya metro station. The passenger flow in this direction increased more than eightfold. When the S510 electric bus route was replaced by the tram, the average number of trips increased from one thousand to more than eight thousand per day.
“By order of Sergey Sobyanin, we have restored tram service on Trifonovskaya Street after a 30-year break. Today, we see how much demand Route No. 5 has: passengers make more than eight thousand trips here per day — which is eight times more than before the tram was reinstated on this route. This result once again proves that this type of transport plays a very important role in the urban environment of the capital,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Route No. 5 resumed operation in 2025. It runs along a historic route and connects major transport hubs of the capital. Passengers can make eight transfers at metro stations and Moscow Central Diameter.
Modern technologies have made it possible to restore tram traffic on Trifonovskaya Street without the construction of an overhead contact line. Fully low-floor “L’vyonok-Moscow” trams with an innovative autonomous running system operate on the route. They cover more than four kilometers without an overhead contact line — from Obraztsova Street to the “Rizhskaya” metro station and back. This is the longest section of autonomous tram movement with passengers in Russia. The trams are equipped with spacious cabins, climate control systems, and sockets for charging mobile devices, and their low-floor design makes travel more convenient for all passengers.
An important landmark on the route is the Russian University of Transport, which is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. Five major universities are located near the stops. The tram has become one of the main travel options from the “Rizhskaya” metro station and the Belorussky railway station for 25,000 students.
