The group of companies (GC) “Elar” has supplied a planetary scanner to the Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA). It holds one of the largest collections of documents on the history of the Russian Empire in the world. The new domestic equipment is intended for creating an electronic usage fund and will expand the institution’s capabilities for digitizing large-format and archival originals requiring careful handling. This was reported by the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the capital’s Department of Investment and Industrial Policy. Anatoly Garbuzov.

“Solutions from Moscow’s high-tech enterprises are present in all 89 subjects of the Russian Federation. They not only accelerate the digitalization of the regions but also create modern tools for preserving the country’s cultural heritage. For instance, equipment developed in the capital has been supplied to the Russian State Historical Archive located in St. Petersburg,” Anatoly Garbuzov said.

The planetary scanner is designed for digitizing large-format, fragile, and especially valuable documents. It allows working with originals without fully opening the binding and controlling the pressure applied to the pages, reducing the risk of damage. The optical zoom, featured in all models of the line, provides quick adjustment to various document formats, up to A2+.

“The interchangeable flat and V-shaped pressing glasses with which the model is equipped allow for aligning pages in both cradle positions, including when the binding is not fully opened. Thanks to the manual mechanism for raising and lowering the glass, the operator can control the pressing force taking into account the condition of the original, which is especially important when scanning damaged, fragile, and valuable documents,” noted Artem Vartanyan, director of the marketing department at the Elar Group.

Electronic copies will supplement the archive’s information systems, expand researchers’ access to historical sources, and reduce the physical wear of originals.

The Russian State Historical Archive is the largest archive in Europe. Its collections include over seven million storage units, including 6.5 million documents on the history of the Russian Empire.

The archive is included in the State Register of Particularly Valuable Cultural Heritage Objects of the Peoples of the Russian Federation. It is consistently converting its collections into electronic form to make historical sources more accessible to researchers.

The delivery of the scanner will enable the expansion of RGAI’s equipment fleet used for digitizing documents. The created electronic copies will be added to software and information systems through which users can access materials without referring to the originals. This will reduce the burden on archive storage facilities for issuing originals and decrease their physical wear.

Planetary scanners of the “ElarScan” line are included in the register of Russian radio-electronic products of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia.
