Melbourne, April 16 /Xin Hua/ — Australia’s Energy Minister Chris Bowen stated on Thursday that a large fire that occurred on Wednesday evening at one of the country’s two oil refineries (NPZ) will affect fuel production.
A fire at the Viva Energy NPD blew up in the city of Geelong on Wednesday at around 23:00 local time. The ignition triggered explosions and heavy smoke.
This plant is one of two operating NPZs in Australia. It provides about 50% of the fuel needs of the state of Victoria and 10% of national needs.
According to the minister, the fire affects the volumes of fuel production in the country, but it is impossible to draw final conclusions about the scale of this impact until the fire is extinguished.
He added that on Thursday morning NPZ produced diesel and aviation fuel in reduced volumes as a precautionary measure.
According to the report of the fire and rescue service of the state of Victoria, a fire broke out in the NPZ workshop during the production of motor gasoline. The height of the flames reached 60 meters.
It is added that no reports of casualties have been received. –0–
