The new building of the State Historical Museum in Moscow.
In the capital’s Khamovniki district, the construction of a new branch building of the State Historical Museum with an area of more than 10 thousand square meters has been completed. The facility has been put into operation. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“Creating and updating museum infrastructure is an important part of the comprehensive development of regions, improving the quality of the living environment, and preserving historical memory. The new building of the State Historical Museum will expand the opportunities for holding exhibitions and educational events. I am confident that the new branch, whose construction was carried out by PPK “Unified Customer”, will become a sought-after space and contribute to preserving heritage for future generations,” said Marat Khusnullin.
The new building is located on Luzhnetsky Drive, in close proximity to the Novodevichy Monastery. The facility was constructed within its buffer zone. Special attention was paid to complying with the requirements for preserving the historical and cultural environment of the area during the project’s implementation, as the monastery ensemble is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The building features modern exhibition spaces, a storage facility for collections, technical rooms, multifunctional and lecture halls, as well as a tour desk. The exhibition hall will be used to display items from the State Historical Museum’s collection.
“When creating the new building of the State Historical Museum, our task was to form a modern infrastructure that meets the requirements of museum activities and at the same time carefully fits into the historical environment of Khamovniki. Today, the construction work is completed, and the facility has been commissioned. Ahead is its transfer to the museum for placing exhibits and preparation for opening to visitors,” noted Karen Oganesyan, General Director of PPC ‘Unified Customer.’
Construction of the new exhibition complex began in the fall of 2023. The central exposition of the new museum center will be dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Novodevichy Monastery, which was celebrated in 2024.
“The Historical Museum has received a modern complex to house the most valuable collections of artistic and historical monuments. The unique collection of icons, church vestments, early printed and manuscript books, frescoes, and other collections that form the pride of the national museum of Russia will be exhibited in the new museum’s exposition. We also plan to place several fund collections in the new building, freeing up space for exhibition display in the main building of the State Historical Museum. The new branch of the Historical Museum is equipped with all necessary modern display and storage equipment. Currently, specialists are creating comfortable conditions here for studying and exhibiting collections, as well as for the safe storage of museum valuables. In addition, we have received an excellent resource for developing educational work, conducting socio-cultural events — creative studios, a modern assembly hall, and a library,” said Alexey Levykin, the General Director of the Historical Museum.
