In the capital, a new high-tech method for treating heart rhythm disorders — electroporation — has begun to be used. Unlike existing methods, this technology affects only the areas of the heart causing the rhythm disturbance by means of short electrical impulses. The first procedures have already been performed and introduced into routine practice at the Moscow Clinical Research Center “Hospital 52”. This was reported by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.
“Moscow operates a comprehensive system of assistance for patients with cardiovascular diseases — from monitoring chronic conditions to performing high-tech surgeries. Polyclinics feature an intelligent reception system that proactively identifies Muscovites with chronic heart failure and ischemic heart disease. An AI service helps to foresee the risks of heart attacks in advance and provide preventive care. Unified infarction and stroke networks have been created for emergencies, making the most advanced treatment methods available to patients. One of these is electroporation for heart rhythm disorders. This minimally invasive surgery is performed through a small vascular puncture, which allows targeted impact on areas of the heart causing rhythm disturbances, practically without affecting surrounding tissues and organs. The procedure lasts no more than 40 minutes, and patients can often be discharged the next day or even the same day after surgery, enabling a quicker return to their usual lives,” noted Anastasia Rakova.
One of the most common problems faced by cardiologists remains atrial fibrillation, or flutter arrhythmia. Without timely treatment, the disease progresses and significantly increases the risk of ischemic stroke, heart failure, and other serious complications. It is precisely for such cases that the electroporation method was developed.
The operation is performed using a minimally invasive method — through a small puncture of the vessel. Under general anesthesia, the doctor inserts a special catheter with miniature electrodes into the heart cavity, which is sequentially placed in areas where the pulmonary veins connect to the heart. The impact lasts hundredths and thousandths of a second, after which the cells causing rhythm disturbances lose their ability to produce pathological impulses. The method is very safe and minimally traumatic. This allows patients to be discharged home as soon as one or two days after the procedure. At the same time, they can return to their usual lifestyle in a short time.
