Gyirong /Tibet/, September 6 /Xinhua/ — China has provided assistance to 1,720 border residents of Nepal after a mudslide struck the Gyirong checkpoint at the China-Nepal border in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China on August 26, the local emergency response and disaster relief headquarters reported on Sunday.
According to the latest data from local authorities, as a result of a mudflow hitting the Gyirong checkpoint, caused by the descent of an ice-rock avalanche on August 26 in Nepal, as of 6:00 PM on Saturday, 43 people have died and 519 others are missing.
Many residents of the Nepal border area who work or do business in Gyirong County found themselves trapped after a mudslide destroyed the border checkpoint through which they entered and exited China.
