Shanghai, September 6 /Xinhua/ — The Chinese city of Shanghai is stepping up efforts to promote its tourist resources to attract more Russian tourists, as the popularity of inbound tourism from Russia continues to grow. This was reported on Saturday by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism.
According to data, from January to July 2026, the number of Russian tourists visiting Shanghai amounted to 422,000 people, which is 134.4% higher compared to the same period last year. In terms of growth rate, Russia ranked first among all source countries of tourists, and also became the second largest source of inbound tourism for Shanghai, which confirms the high recognition of the city’s cultural and tourist products in the Russian market.
From September 2 to 4, a delegation from the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism visited Moscow to participate in the International Tourism Exhibition-Forum “OTDYKH Leisure 2026.” Various resources of Shanghai were presented at the event, such as the LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort park, Shanghai Airlines Tours International /Group/ Co., Ltd., SHANGHAI C&J TRAVEL SERVICE CO., LTD., and several hospitals.
Shanghai also organized individual business meetings and specialized presentations on cultural tourism. 18 leading companies and organizations in the areas of hospitality, theme recreation, premium medical tourism, and travel services showcased Shanghai’s multi-level resources: from elite accommodations and shopping to family holidays, interregional tours, and international medical tourism. The demonstration attracted over 300 Russian representatives of the premium tourism sector, interested in negotiations and cooperation.
Currently, Shanghai has released the latest version of the tourist map and guide for incoming guests in Russian. As part of the 37th Shanghai Tourism Festival, which starts in September this year, a creative team from Russia will take part in the festival’s ceremonial parade. In addition, the team is also invited to perform as “observers” to get acquainted with inbound tourism and to personally experience the continuously improved services for foreign tourists in Shanghai.
In the future, Shanghai will continue to open up opportunities for the markets of Russia and Eastern Europe, constantly implement innovations in the development of cultural and tourism products and cross-border cooperation models, firmly strengthen the foundation for mutual exchange in the field of culture and tourism, and also promote the rapprochement of peoples of different countries. The city will actively showcase to the world its vibrant, multifaceted, and bright urban image, tirelessly maintaining its status as one of the main destinations for inbound tourism in China. -0-
