More than 1,200 children’s and dramatic performances, ballets, musicals, and productions in other genres were presented in the capital as part of the third International Open Festival “Theatrical Boulevard”. It took place from May 30 to August 30 at 20 city venues. Everyone interested could also attend concerts, creative meetings, poetry shows, master classes, film screenings, and lectures, she noted Natalya Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow.
“The number of participating groups has increased by one third. This year, the festival united 400 troupes from more than 60 cities across Russia — from Moscow and Kaliningrad to Novosibirsk and Vladivostok. Artists from other countries also performed with their programs: Kazakhstan, Belarus, China, Indonesia, Argentina, Mexico, and more,” said Natalia Sergunina.
Leading theaters from across the country
Leading capital theaters joined the project, such as the Oleg Tabakov Moscow Theater, the Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov, “Sovremennik,” the Russian Academic Youth Theater, the State Academic Theater named after Mossovet, and the State Academic Theater named after Yevgeny Vakhtangov.
More than 130 institutions from across the country participated in the festival for the first time. Among them are the State Academic Maly Theatre of Russia, the Sverdlovsk State Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy, the Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin, and the dance theatre “Gzhel.”
In addition to the venues already beloved by the audience, guests were awaited by new ones: on Pushkinskaya Embankment in Gorky Park and Tsarskaya Embankment in the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve. The performances also invited viewers to watch on the travelling “Diligence” stage.
Historical productions and creative laboratories
One of the important topics traditionally was the historical heritage of our country. For example, the program included the concert “No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten,” dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, readings of front-line poems and letters, and performances of “The Mystery of the Kulikovo Battle” and “My Great Russia.”
For children, performances such as “Thumbelina,” “Masha and the Bear,” “The Tale of Tsar Saltan,” “Petrushka,” “Chuk and Gek,” “The Little Prince,” and the musical “The Wizard of the Emerald City” have been prepared, along with circus shows and dance master classes.
In creative workshops, participants were invited to develop costume sketches, create decorations, master the intricacies of directing and makeup, and develop their acting talents. A series of lectures and interactive sessions were conducted by employees of the Moscow Art Academic Theatre Museum, the State Central Theatre Museum named after A.A. Bakhrushin, university representatives, artists, and props specialists from the capital’s theaters.

Some events were organized together with other major cultural projects. Among them were the Moscow Jazz Festival, “Gorky+”, the IX Grand Children’s Festival, and the All-Russian Marathon Festival of Theaters “Russia — Theater — Society”, timed to the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation.
