The Torpedo stadium was reconstructed in the capital. On City Day, it was opened by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin.
“A large number of Muscovites have approached you, Vladimir Vladimirovich, regarding the revival of the Torpedo stadium. This is the oldest Moscow football club, well known to Muscovites, but also famous throughout the country. Before the reconstruction, the situation was such that it was essentially an emergency stadium where all training had been stopped. Considering the historical significance and tradition of Torpedo, we made the decision and rebuilt it from scratch. Now it is a first-category stadium, where competitions of any type and any level can be held,” Sergey Sobyanin reported to Vladimir Putin.
The historic Torpedo Stadium named after E.A. Streltsov was built in 1959 as a training field for the ZIL football team — Moscow’s Torpedo. Until 1976, the stadium had one stand, which was located on the hillside next to the field. After the reconstruction carried out shortly before the 1980 Olympics, the stadium’s capacity increased to 16,000 spectators.
From 1978 to 1997, it was the home stadium of Torpedo. It was named after Eduard Streltsov on July 21, 1997, on the 60th anniversary of the legendary athlete’s birth. Since 2003, the football club (FC) Moscow held its home games here. Currently, the stadium has once again become the arena of the Torpedo (Moscow) club.
In 1980, one of the first electric lawn heating systems in the country was installed here. Before the I World Youth Games were held in Moscow in 1998, the by then quite dilapidated stadium was partially renovated, and plastic seats appeared in the stands. The capacity was reduced to 13,450 people.
“Now we have turned ‘Torpedo’ into a modern football stadium for all-Russian and international level competitions. The central arena has 15 thousand seats (with a maximum capacity of up to 20 thousand people in concert mode), and the playing field is covered with FIFA Quality Pro level turf. Nearby, three training fields have been built: one full-sized and two smaller ones,” the Mayor of Moscow wrote in

Modern reconstruction
As part of the comprehensive reconstruction completed in September this year, the Torpedo Stadium was transformed into a modern football arena for hosting all-Russian and international competitions — Category I according to the classification of the Russian Football Union.
The area of the renovated stadium is 62.02 thousand square meters, and including all buildings on the complex grounds — 70 thousand square meters. The maximum capacity of the central arena was increased to 20,000 people, and the number of seats — to 15,000 (1,600 more than before). The playing field was covered with artificial turf of FIFA Quality Pro standard. In addition, as part of the stadium reconstruction, one full-size (105 by 68 meters) and two smaller (60 by 40 meters) training fields with artificial surfaces of the same quality were built.
The main idea of the project was to reflect the history of the Torpedo football club in the architecture. The main volume of the arena was made in the form of a huge metal gear, referring to ZIL and the industrial past of the Danilovsky district. At the same time, the toothed silhouette is formed not by decorative elements, but by the geometry of the facade and roof.
The design also incorporates the symbols of FC “Torpedo”. A giant letter T is hidden in the layout of the stylobate part, which can be seen from a bird’s-eye view.
The facade of the arena was made from multilayer steel composite panels and fiber concrete. Due to limited space, it was impossible to install the heavy panels in the traditional way, so first, a lightweight metal framework — a kind of external frame — was erected around the entire perimeter, and then the facade panels were gradually hung on it. Among other things, this engineering solution allowed facade work to proceed simultaneously with interior finishing and the installation of engineering systems.
A unique floating roof was installed above the arena: its overhang reaches almost 19 meters, yet there are no additional supports along the edge of the field. Usually, such canopies require the installation of columns, which obstruct the spectators’ view. At the Torpedo stadium, this problem was solved using long cantilevered metal trusses, so the roof appears to float above the stands. Beneath it are hidden service walkways for maintaining lighting, acoustics, and engineering systems.
Another important feature of the project is the maximum use of the natural terrain relief.
“The object is essentially built into the slope between Vostochnaya Street and Simonovskaya Embankment, its
new section We also recently completed it. The architects made a stadium with two levels of entry: the upper one facing the city and the lower one facing the river. They are connected by a wide staircase and a long ramp,

The architects also preserved the familiar pedestrian route along the upper alley. Now it will be transformed into an open promenade and observation deck overlooking the Moskva River. Thus, “Torpedo” will not only operate on match days but will also become a natural element of the urban environment.
As part of the reconstruction, infrastructure was also built for the Torpedo football club museum, a club merchandise store, the Torpedo children’s football academy, catering establishments, and auxiliary services.
In 2021, a new sports complex “Torpedo” on Vostochnaya Street was put into operation, which is popular among fans of football and other sports.
Overall, after the renovation, the Torpedo sports complex can accommodate up to one million visitors per year. The stadium has become a high-tech engineering structure and a new architectural symbol of Moscow at the same time.
District development
In addition to the stadium reconstruction, in September 2026, the new section of the Simonovskaya Embankment of the Moskva River was completed, becoming a natural extension of the Krutitskaya Embankment.
Sobyanin announced large-scale development plans for the Simonovskaya and Krutitskaya embankments
Currently, modern residential complexes with kindergartens, a school, garages, and other necessary infrastructure continue to be constructed in the area around the Torpedo stadium. From 2022 to 2024, the RiverSky residential complex (eight buildings, 1,356 apartments with a living area of 103,000 square meters) and the Forever residential complex (11 buildings, 1,491 apartments with a living area of 138,350 square meters) were commissioned. A new low-rise quarter is under construction on Simonovskaya Embankment.
Football Moscow
Football is one of the most popular sports in Moscow. It is estimated that 350 thousand people play it regularly.
In the Russian Premier League, Moscow is represented by four professional football clubs: CSKA, Spartak, Dynamo, and Lokomotiv. Moscow’s Torpedo competes in the First League (the second-tier division of Russian football).
In addition to professional and amateur football league championships, the city annually hosts numerous football competitions. In 2024 alone, over 700 tournaments took place. The most famous among them is the Moscow Sports Cup “Leather Ball”.
In the system of sports schools Department of Sports of the City of Moscow About 12 thousand people are engaged in football. Numerous football sections operate based at general education schools and commercial sports clubs.
In Moscow, 1,376 sports areas have been equipped for playing, including 139 full-sized fields in courtyards, on the grounds of schools, universities, and sports facilities, in parks, and in natural areas.
Construction of sports facilities
From 2011 to 2026, more than 350 sports facilities of various types were built in Moscow, among which football fields and stadiums hold a special place.
The major football infrastructure in Moscow includes six large existing and under-construction arenas. These are Luzhniki, Lokomotiv, Spartak, CSKA, Dinamo, and Torpedo.
In 2014, the Spartak Stadium with a capacity of 45,000 seats was built, and in 2016 — the CSKA Stadium with 30,000 seats. In 2014, the reconstruction of the Lokomotiv Stadium with 27,000 seats was completed, in 2017 — the Large Sports Arena of Luzhniki with 81,000 spectator seats, and in 2018 — the Dynamo Stadium with 26,000 seats. In 2026, work was completed on the Torpedo Stadium with 15,000 seats.
In addition, in recent years, 12 city stadiums — football fields with artificial turf, stands, and heating — have been built with funds from Moscow’s Targeted Investment Program. Six historic small stadiums have also been landscaped and modernized. These are the “Avangard,” “Yurlovsky,” “Desna,” “Frezer,” “Lokomotiv,” and “Metallurg” stadiums. There are plans to renovate five more such facilities.
