Since the beginning of the year, over 220 new pedestrian crossings and more than 70 safety islands have appeared in the capital under the projects of the curators from the Traffic Management Center (TsODD). When preparing decisions, specialists analyze accident rates, traffic intensity, pedestrian and transport routes, as well as the characteristics of each street. Special attention is paid to areas near schools, hospitals, cultural and educational institutions, metro stations, Moscow Central Circle and Moscow Central Diameter.
“We pay special attention to improving pedestrian infrastructure as directed by Sergey Sobyanin within the framework of the transport development strategy until 2030. Since the beginning of 2026, more than 220 new pedestrian crossings and over 70 safety islands have appeared in the capital through the projects of the Traffic Management Center road curators. When developing several solutions, the wishes of Muscovites were taken into account. Thanks to these changes, moving around the city is becoming safer and more convenient,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
The arrangement of new pedestrian crossings is one of the key focus areas of the road supervisors at the TsODD.
This year, in the Western Administrative District, in the Kuntsevo area, specialists installed a controlled pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Yelninskaya and Istrinskaya streets. The site is located near residential neighborhoods, public transport stops, and educational institutions, including the buildings of school No. 887. The new crossing with a traffic light allows residents to cross the road safely and to more conveniently get to schools, stops, and the Molodyozhnaya metro station.
In addition, a pedestrian crossing has appeared in Zelenograd, in the Kryukovo area, on Letchitsy Tarasova Street near the intersection with 1 Maya Street. The section is located in the residential part of the district, near educational and children’s institutions: nearby is the preschool department of school No. 2045, in building 2030, and on 1 Maya Street — the Orthodox School of St. Filaret of Moscow.
Equally important are the safety islands. They separate vehicle and pedestrian flows, reduce accidents, and make residents’ daily routes more comfortable. For pedestrians, they provide a safe place to wait in the middle of a wide or busy road.
Thus, in the Central Administrative District, in the Khamovniki area, on Plyushchikha Street near houses 64/6 (buildings 1 and 1a), 58, 37, 33, 27, 22, and 13, six safety islands have been installed. This street runs through a residential area and connects it with nearby educational, cultural, and sports facilities. In particular, at house 64/6, there is the theatrical center “Na Plyushchikha,” and nearby are buildings of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov. The district also houses buildings of School No. 1231.
In the South-Western Administrative District, a safety island was added in the Zyuzino area at an unregulated pedestrian crossing on Bolotnikovskaya Street, near house 63 on Novocheremushkinskaya Street. Nearby are the building of School No. 1948 (Bolotnikovskaya Street, house 52) and preschool institutions.
All these changes are the result of systematic work by the road curators of the Center for Traffic Management (CTM), who analyze accident data, consider residents’ requests, and design schemes to make the urban environment more comfortable. Each year, they prepare about a thousand solutions for the development of the road network: from new crosswalks, safety islands, and traffic lights to additional lanes, re-striping, and speed limit changes. This approach increases safety for drivers, public transport passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and users of individual mobility rental services. By the end of the year, more than 50 safety islands and over 70 pedestrian crossings will appear in Moscow.
