On September 16, the Agency for Creative Industries, a subordinate body To the Department of Culture of the City of Moscow, together with the Union of Russian Designers, opens applications for participation in the second phase of the project “Design Factory 4.0”. Designers, design studios, young professionals, and students will receive tasks composed by Russian companies and will propose solutions for products, packaging, object environments, urban spaces, and visual communications. The final project defense will take place on January 22, 2027.
About the project
“Design Factory 4.0” is an industrial design solutions competition, a professional platform for interaction between businesses, designers, and industry experts. It is focused on various design fields related to the creation of modern products and user experience: industrial, graphic, communication, digital, and environmental design.
The project unites Russian business and representatives of the creative industries. Companies come with specific production and business tasks. Thus, designers have the opportunity to work on real challenges of entrepreneurship and industry, become part of a professional community, receive support from experts, mentors, and trackers, as well as enhance their portfolio with practical experience and build prospects for further cooperation with companies.
In turn, companies gain access to a professional community of designers, test ideas, and interact with qualified specialists and teams.
The first stream of “Design Factory 4.0”
In three months, 192 applications were submitted for participation in the first batch from designers across 28 regions of Russia: Arkhangelsk, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kirov, Kemerovo, Leningrad, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Penza, Omsk, Rostov, Ryazan, Sverdlovsk, Samara, Tambov, Tomsk, Tula, Chelyabinsk, and Yaroslavl oblasts; Krasnodar, Perm, Krasnoyarsk, Stavropol, and Khabarovsk krais; the Udmurt Republic; as well as the republics of Crimea, Bashkortostan, and Mordovia. Applications from designers and partner companies were accepted from May 19 to August 13, and from August 14 to October 19 participants are working on design solutions under the guidance of mentors and experts. Final presentations will take place on October 20.
For participants from 30 companies, 41 business tasks were formulated related to the development and improvement of products, visual solutions, items, and environmental objects.
The project format allows designers to focus on business requests, consider user needs, production specifics, and brand objectives. Based on its results, the best solutions move from concept to further work with enterprises.
Design as a tool for product development
The works of the participants of the first and second streams will be evaluated by representatives of the Russian design industry. The project’s jury is headed by Vitaly Stavitsky, the president of the Union of Designers of Russia.
The jury included Aleksei Karfidov, Sergey Smirnov, Sergey Soltan, Vladimir Shipilov, Maria Stashenko, Aleksei Sibilev, Aleksei Sharshakov, Evgenia Ezhikova, Pavel Pisklakov, Nikolay Oblapokhin, Sergey Khelmyanov, Maria Otorutskaya, Anna Lukanina, and other representatives of the Russian design industry.
The Creative Industries Agency is an institute for the development of the capital’s creative industries.
