UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk stated that he is shocked by the decision of the Russian authorities to recognize the human rights organization “Memorial” as “extremist.”

In a statement published on April 10 in Geneva, the Turk noted that such a step actually criminalizes the activities of one of the oldest and most well-known human rights organizations in the country.

According to the People’s Commissar, this decision fits into a broader trend of legislation aimed at combating extremism, for prosecuting individuals and organizations allegedly linked to “extremist” movements or groups.

He also drew attention to the recent search in the editorial office of “Novaya Gazeta” and the detention of journalist Oleg Roldugin, calling these events yet another evidence of pressure on “civil society, freedom of expression of opinions, and freedom of associations.”

The human rights commissioner called on the Russian authorities to comply with international obligations in the field of human rights, to immediately revoke the decision regarding “Memorial” and to guarantee that no one will be subjected to criminal or administrative prosecution for exercising their fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.
