First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, during a working trip to Sarov, visited key facilities of the National Center for Physics and Mathematics (NCFM) and the Russian Federal Nuclear Center – All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC–VNIIEF).

At the solemn ceremony in honor of the anniversary of RFYATS-VNIIEF, Denis Manturov read out the congratulations from the President of Russia to the team and presented state and departmental awards to 14 employees of the institute.

“Congratulations on the 80th anniversary of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center – the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics. This anniversary is a major and significant event not only for your team but also for the national atomic industry and all of Russia. After all, it was at the Sarov Nuclear Center that the foundation of the nuclear shield was laid, which for many years has reliably ensured the safety and sovereignty of our country.””Here unique engineering developments have been created that opened up new possibilities for strengthening the defense-industrial complex, developing energy, transport and medicine, mastering the Arctic, the World Ocean, space,” it says in Vladimir Putin’s congratulatory message.

The head of state noted that at the core of the impressive victories and achievements is the selfless, heroic labor of outstanding scientists, engineers, and specialists.

“Over the past decades, the enterprise has come a long way, transforming into a powerful, multidisciplinary scientific research center of global level. Its competencies have long gone beyond the scope of its original specialization. And today, alongside the unconditional fulfillment of the state defense order, the center successfully operates in the interests of the civilian industrial sector. It solves strategic tasks in the field of supercomputer modeling, designs the most complex laser installations, and researches advanced materials.””Your developments in the field of microelectronics, instrumentation, and digitization of manufacturing processes are also aimed at strengthening the technological sovereignty of the state,” emphasized Denis Manturov.

“Perhaps the most difficult thing in the world is to do something for the first time. And it so happened that precisely VNIIEF’s history entrusted it to go ahead in creating nuclear weapons, thermonuclear weapons, a whole range of technologies that are in demand today in the civilian sector. It is very important that at VNIIEF this tradition was not only valued and preserved first, but also actively developed. For example, here the National Center for Physics and Mathematics was created, which became a pioneer in the establishment of new-type scientific and educational centers,” said the general director of the state corporation “Rosatom,” Alexey Likhachyov.

On the territory of the House, the first vice-premier of RAS-FNIIF laid flowers at the monument to Academician Yuliy Borisovich Khariton – the founder and long-time scientific director of the Soviet atomic project.

At the NCFM site, which is being created under the directive of the President of Russia, the First Deputy Prime Minister familiarized himself with the results of the scientific and educational activities of the center and plans for its further development.

“In Sarov, a branch of the country’s leading university – M.V. Lomonosov MGOU – is developing, which is one of the key educational elements of the NSFM. A comfortable environment for life and the start of serious research work has been created here. I am confident that the discoveries made within these walls will become a starting point for a whole technological era. A special value of this educational ecosystem is its continuity: the overwhelming majority of graduates connect their lives with science and find employment at the enterprises of the state corporation “Rosatom,” noted the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin.

Context

The educational core of NCPhM became the branch of MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov established in Sarov in 2021. University lecturers, together with the state corporation “Rosatom,” developed unique graduate and master’s programs to train specialists in the promising fields of physics, mathematics, informatics, and supercomputer technology. By the end of 2025, MSU Sarov will have graduated three cohorts of master’s students – that is 140 highly qualified specialists – physicists and mathematicians, the majority of whom already work at strategic enterprises and scientific organizations in the country.

The First Deputy Prime Minister talked with students who spoke about their ambitious scientific tasks related to the industry, as well as about how they combine their studies at the university with practical engineering training at the Federal Nuclear Center.

At a meeting with the heads of federal nuclear organizations and enterprises of the nuclear weapons complex, Denis Manturov highly praised the achievements of the Sarov nuclear center and its contribution to strengthening the country’s defense capability. Following the results of the visit, a number of steps were outlined for the further development of the scientific and production infrastructure of NCFM and RFYaTS-VNIIEF.

Russian Federal Nuclear Center – All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics (RFNC – VNIIEF) – a leading enterprise of the state corporation Rosatom, the largest scientific and technological enterprise in Russia on a global scale. Established in 1946 to implement the Soviet atomic project. Here the first domestic atomic and hydrogen bombs were developed. It is the city-forming enterprise of Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod region.

NCFM is a modern platform for conducting fundamental and applied research. Created by order of the President of theRussia Vladimir Putin is the flagship project of the initiative to open new scientific infrastructure within the framework of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia (2022–2031).
