Muscovites will have the opportunity to try volunteering before the first city event on September 19 as part of the “Get Involved!” course. The website of the “Mosvolonter” resource center has opened registration for a one-day in-person training program. It will help those who want to engage in volunteering but do not yet know where to start. Participants will get acquainted with areas of assistance, analyze real tasks, and simulate a real volunteer shift in a playful manner.
“The first step into volunteering can be challenging for many: there is a desire to help, but questions arise — which direction to choose, what will happen during the shift, what tasks will be assigned. The updated program for beginner assistants includes more practice: participants will be able to try different roles, analyze real situations, and understand which volunteer format suits them best. After the course, participants will receive a clear path for further development in volunteering and community support,” said Alexander Levit, director of the Mosvolonter resource center.
The beginner volunteer course “Get Involved!” will be held at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics. Anyone interested can join after completing the mandatory registration on the resource center’s website. “Mosvolonter” until September 13. No experience is required to participate — the program is designed specifically for those who want to take their first steps, understand the opportunities, and move from desire to their first real volunteer event.
The first volunteer shift is still a training one
In the new academic year, the beginner volunteer course “Get Involved!” has been updated, putting the main emphasis on practical and game formats. Participants will complete tasks they will encounter at a city event. They will learn how the volunteer team is organized, what functional zones may be present at the venue, as well as how to interact with organizers and guests.
One of the main parts of the course will take place in the format of a role-playing game. Students will take turns playing the roles of volunteers and visitors of a simulated city event. They will have to respond to requests of varying complexity, interact with other participants, and find solutions in both familiar and unusual situations. They will be able to understand how a shift is organized from the inside in advance and come to the first real event prepared.
Find your direction
The course will cover various areas and opportunities for providing assistance, so that everyone can choose an activity based on their own interests, free time, and skills. Throughout the day, participants will gradually build a personal volunteering path. They will identify areas of interest, suitable participation conditions, and a specific next step—for example, selecting the first event and registering for it. Special attention will be given to preparation for the shift. Participants will be explained what needs to be known in advance, how to interact with the team and guests, and whom to contact if a question arises on site.
The introduction to volunteering will not end with the program. After the course, participants will be able to join a general support chat, where they will continue to receive informational and consulting support. This format is especially convenient for beginners — after the training, they will not have to independently search for answers to questions or figure out what step to take next. At the end of the program, each participant will receive a certificate of completion of the intensive course.
The speakers of the course will be experts from the “Mosvolunteer” resource center, volunteer trainers, and ambassadors of the “Volunteers of Moscow” community. They will share practical experience and help participants understand situations that arise during volunteering events.
From the course to city events
The “Get Involved!” course became the starting point for Anna Nesterova’s active participation in the projects of the Mosvolunteer resource center. Her first similar experience was in 2021 as part of the Russian Student Spring. Later, Anna Nesterova joined the course to better understand the opportunities available for volunteers. The girl already knew that she was interested in event volunteering, and the course helped her finally decide. After the training, she began to regularly participate in city events. Among the most memorable for her was the city graduation celebration at VDNH.
“To those who are just thinking about volunteering, I would advise not to be afraid. ‘Get involved!’ is an excellent first step: the course helps you get acquainted with different directions and understand what suits you personally,” shared Anna Nesterova.
