On August 27, Russian Cinema Day will be celebrated on the territory of VDNH. The guests have been prepared thematic excursions around the main exhibition of the country, the Slavic writing museum “Slovo,” and the center “Cosmonautics and Aviation.” In addition, an exhibition about the exploration of the Arctic and the embodiment of this theme in domestic cinematography will open at the State Central Museum of Cinema.
From domestic classics to space science fiction
On this day at 13:00 it will begin excursion through the territory of VDNKh, dedicated to the history of domestic cinema. Participants will learn which films were shot here and how the sites of the country’s main exhibition are connected to the development of cinema. In particular, there will be talk about the films “The Swineherd and the Shepherd,” “The Foundling,” and “The Bright Path.” On the route, guests will also see the sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman,” the “Circular Kinopanorama” pavilion, and other objects related to domestic cinema.
At 7:00 PM, a tour will take place at the Museum of Slavic Writing “Slovo” “Russian cinema is a reflection of the country’s history”. It will be dedicated to domestic films about different historical eras and events. Guests will be told about the films “Andrei Rublev” by Andrei Tarkovsky, “Yaroslav the Wise” by Grigory Kokhan, “Alexander Nevsky” and “Ivan the Terrible” by Sergei Eisenstein, and other works.
At 7:30 PM, a tour will begin at the “Cosmonautics and Aviation” center “Cinema and Space”. Participants will find out which details of famous space flight movies are based on scientific data and which have become artistic fiction. The focus will be on films such as Interstellar, Star Trek, Moscow-Cassiopeia, Children of the Universe, The Taming of the Fire, and Space Flight. In addition, the guide will talk about science fiction and its role in popularizing space exploration. Guests will also discuss which technologies and scenarios shown in the movies might come true in the future.
On the same day, the Cinema Museum will open the exhibition “Cinema Born of Ice and Courage,” dedicated to the history of Arctic exploration and the portrayal of this theme in domestic cinema. The exhibition will tell the stories of pioneers, scientists, and sailors who explored the northern territories, as well as directors and cinematographers who worked there under challenging natural conditions.
Guests will learn in which remote and hard-to-reach areas of the country the filming took place, what climatic conditions the filmmakers faced, and what technical solutions they used to convey the atmosphere of the Arctic. A separate part of the exhibition will introduce the process of making films about the North.
The exhibition’s thematic zones are styled after the icebreaker “Krasin,” the huts of a polar research station, and the conning tower of a submarine. They will feature archival materials and newsreels, rare photographs, models of scenery and costumes, documents, and other items. Among them are materials related to the films “Heroes of the Arctic. Chelyuskin” (1934), “The Head of Chukotka” (1967), “The Red Tent” (1969), “Sannikov Land” (1973), “Two Captains” (1976), and “Torpedo Bombers” (1983). The exhibition will be open for visits from August 28 through ticket to the Museum of Cinema.
