In the layout workshop of SPbGASU
On August 11, participants of the International Summer Restoration School “Heritage of Vyborg and Rostov-on-Don” continued the educational program in Saint Petersburg. On this day, students and teachers visited the cultural heritage site “Pashkov House (Department of Appanages)” on Liteyny Prospekt, and then got acquainted with the architectural and educational environment of the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The first stop of the program was the Pashkov House – a historic building at Liteyny Prospect, 37–39. Today, it is a cultural heritage site, and its history is closely linked to the development of the central part of Petersburg and the formation of the architectural appearance of Liteyny.

Liteyny Avenue has remained one of the important urban thoroughfares of Saint Petersburg for several centuries. Its development took place gradually, and the buildings located here reflect various stages of the city’s development. The Pashkov House is of particular interest precisely as part of this historic urban environment: its architecture and planning structure allow the building to be considered not in isolation, but in the context of the surrounding development. It is worth noting that since 2024, the building has housed the Restorer’s House – the center of the restoration community of the Northern capital.
The school participants were able to learn about the history of the site, the features of its architecture, and contemporary issues of preserving the historical environment. For future architects-restorers, such excursions are especially important: they allow them to see how heritage preservation principles work not only on individual monuments but also on the scale of an entire city.
Particular attention within the summer school program is given to exactly such a comprehensive approach. The experience gained while studying Vyborg is compared by the participants with Petersburg – a city where historical buildings are an integral part of modern urban life.
After the tour, the participants went to SPbGASU. A special program was organized for them there, including an introduction to the university campus, the library, and the modeling workshop.
At the university library, the participants became acquainted with the possibilities of working with professional and scientific literature.
Then they visited the model workshop. Working with physical models allows architects to see the project in volume, assess its scale, relation to the surrounding buildings, and spatial solutions. This is especially relevant for the participants of the summer school, as their own projects involve not only working with drawings and digital models but also require considering the architectural context.
After the tour, the participants continued working in teams on the territory of SPbGASU. The knowledge gained during the trips and professional excursions is used by the students in the development of their own concepts.
Thus, the program on August 11 combined several important components of preparing future specialists in architectural heritage preservation: familiarization with a real cultural heritage site, study of the historical urban environment, work with professional sources and materials, as well as practical project activity.
